and administration costs are not in- <br />cluded. <br />The cost per gallon varies widely, <br />depending upon the capacity of the <br />reservoir, character and amount of <br />earthwork, and many other variables. <br />General Design Considerations <br />Regardless of what type reservoir is <br />selected, certain basic factors should <br />receive consideration in developing the <br />design. Frequently, one or more of <br />these basic factors are overlooked, <br />with serious consequences. <br />1. Foundation problems. Soil char- <br />acteristics of the site should be de- <br />termined by specialists in soils engi- <br />neering. The allowable bearing values <br />and probable differential settlements <br />should be estimated based on a satu- <br />rated condition of the subgrade soils. <br />Consideration should be given to over - <br />excavation of the site and refilling <br />with suitable granular material if the <br />subgrade soils are expansive or yield- <br />ing, or if the subgrade is partly on <br />rock and partly on earth or partly on <br />cut and partly on fill.
