Orozco, Norma
From:
Anakaren Cardenas <aucrdns@gmail.com>
Sent:
Tuesday, June 02, 2020 9:02 AM
To:
Sarmiento, Vicente
Cc:
eComment
Subject:
Opposed: SA Budget Proposal
Dear Councilmember Sarmiento, Mayor Pulido, and City Council:
My name is Anakaren and I am writing as a constituent of your ward to oppose the proposed budget to increase
public safety spending by $13.5 million. Please put politics aside. You have a B.S. in Economics from a well -
respected university, show us with your vote how your education not only taught you to think critically, but also
to consider the social implications of a vote in favor of increased public safety spending. That would be the easy
way out.
I'm asking you to use your influence to instead seek out the root causes of the social instability that perpetuates
our city to better understand how you can help the community. It is easy to cast a vote, assign responsibility to
another department, and just throw money at the problem. It takes more effort to analyze, draw educated
conclusions, and to do the work. You are a public servant, serve. I'd like to see you propose some innovative
approaches to improving public safety. Show us that you have done your homework, considered alternatives,
put together a team of community members eager to have their voice heard, and who are "in the trenches" so to
speak. Take a walk through the neighborhoods, talk to the people, listen to them. They will not all come to you
in a city council meeting. Seek them out.
Your actions are writing the history of our city. I hope you'll be on the right side of it.
At this time, it is important that we fund community resources and stop the overcriminalization of our city.
Thank you,
Anakaren Cardenas
kq,)
