Orozco, Norma
From: Ruth Linnert <ruthielinnert@gmail.com>
Sent: Tuesday, June 02, 2020 11:10 AM
To: eComment
Subject: Social Justice for Santa Ana
I'm a lifelong Santa Ana resident. Growing up in this city has taught me a lot about myself and our community.
I know there are countless ways to get involved to ensure our community is safe and supported. I'm constantly
re-evaluating, learning, and growing so I can do better. I participated in what started off as a peaceful
demonstration on Sunday, May 31. That day was emotional for so many of us. It was empowering and
comforting to see how many locals wish to have their voices heard, specifically as it relates to systemic racism,
social justice, and the rampant violence and corruption that is associated with policing. I'm disappointed by the
aggression and even the silence in response to the demands of our community. Crowds dispersed that evening
after we were met with violent tactics by the police (tear gas). So many of us do not trust the police. We avoid
them in anger and in fear. I know I can be doing better, but SHAME on our mayor and city council for
perpetuating the problems that make it difficult for black, indigenous, and people of color to feel safe in our
city. I used to pride myself on being part of a city that offers sanctuary to marginalized people. I ask that you
please take down the flag that is currently flying in solidarity with the police force. It is harmful and hateful. It
discriminates and takes away from the outcries for justice we are demanding in this city and worldwide. Please
address this and all concerns related to the disproportionate funding that is being budgeted for the SAPD. The
funding would be better spent on social programs and resources that aid the people. No amount of money can
buy back the trust we have lost in this broken system. As representatives of our community, it is your
responsibility to regain that trust and the conscious and fair distribution of funds is a start.
Thank you,
Ruth Linnert
\Z
