Salas, Diana
From: Gloria Alvarado <gloria@oclabor.org>
Sent: Tuesday, June 02, 2020 4:54 PM
To: eComment
Subject: Standing in support with SEIU 721 Members
Dear City of Santa Ana Mayor and Council,
My name is Gloria Alvarado, Executive Director of the Orange County Labor Federation (OCLF). OCLF
represents over 93 unions in every sector with over 250,000 members throughout Orange County, with 31,595
members in Santa Ana.
I'm writing to let you know of our disappointment and disbelieve when we heard that 176 of our SEIU 721
members received notices of separation as of May 21, 2020. These are members who have worked 5, 10, 15,
20, 25 years and beyond for the City of Santa Ana to serve our city's parks and recreation, youth services and
sports, zoo, library, and the police department. Not only are they city employees, they are residents, voters,
and tax -payers of the City of Santa Ana. Most have dedicated their entire careers to serving city residents and
representing Santa Ana with the upmost professionalism.
SEIU 721 has been a true partner in confronting difficult times in the past and now. We stand shoulder -to -
shoulder with our brothers and sisters and ask that you direct the city manager not to balance the budget on
the backs of city employees and immediately rescind the layoffs. Furthermore, direct your Human Resources
Department to come to the table and find alternatives in good faith.
The Orange County Labor Federation and SEIU 721, alongside the rest of the labor community, have embarked
on a robust advocacy campaign supporting municipalities at a national, state, and local level to secure funding
through stimulus packages such as the Heroes Act.
As a resident, taxpayer, voter and former employee of the City, I know how important it is to have dedicated
personnel providing services with care and connection to residents.
We count on your leadership, vision and wisdom to serve our community and protect our working families.
In Solidarity,
Gloria Alvarado
Executive Director
Orange County Labor Federation
309 N. Rampart St., Suite A
Orange, CA 92868
C: (714) 322-2951
T: (714) 385-1534
http://www.oclabor.org
