Orozco, Norma
From:
Ashley Vu <ashleyyvuu@gmail.com>
Sent:
Monday, June 01, 2020 7:23 PM
To:
eComment
Subject:
June 2, 2020 - Agenda Item 65B
Dear Mayor Pulido and City Council,
My name is Ashley Vu and I am writing as a Santa Ana resident to oppose the proposed budget to increase
public safety by $13.5 million. As I'm sure you already know, Santa Ana is experiencing financial obstacles due
to COVID-19. According to Finance Director Downs, Santa Ana is experiencing $12 million in losses this year
alone due to hits to sales taxes, parking fines, special collected fees and other sources of revenue.
Santa Ana residents do not need more money to be going to SAPD. It has become fundamentally clear that
SAPD is not here to protect us, but to lock us up. More money to them is going to do --and has been doing --
nothing for us. If this pandemic showed us anything, it's that our community --low income, comprised of
numerous essential workers --needs greater access to health care. Not only that, but we need greater funding
going to our education system, public transportation, and mental health resources. The current allocation of
funding reveals that Santa Ana is seen as criminals and not as people, individuals deserving of better life quality
and opportunities. We need to stop the overcriminalization of our city, and start providing actual useful
resources to our people.
Thank you for taking the time to hear my concerns.
Best,
Ashley Vu
Lf 2'
