Flores, Dora
From: Houston, Nicole
Sent: Monday, August 17, 2020 1:44 PM
To: eComment_Forwarding
Subject: FW: Public Comment Agenda item 85B
From: ALONDRA YESENIA SALAZAR [mailto:salazarl6@ucla.edu]
Sent: Monday, August 17, 2020 12:30 PM
To: Penaloza, David <DPenaloza@santa-ana.org>; Pulido, Miguel <MPulido@santa-ana.org>
Subject: Public Comment Agenda item 85B
Hello Council Member David Penaloza and Mayor Miguel Pulido,
I am emailing both of you in support of item 85B to give all circulating petitions an extension. Due to the global
pandemic, we lost 133 days of signature gathering out of the 180 days we were legally entitled to gather enough
signatures to put rent control on the ballot for Santa Ana. The shelter -in -place orders explicitly prohibited us
from being able to go door-to-door, but we have demonstrated massive public interest in our campaign. People
are receiving abusive rent increases even during the COVID19 pandemic and need protections now more than
ever. Members in your community have struggled with getting and keeping their housing for a long time. Santa
Ana has been experiencing a major housing crisis, due to these skyrocketing rent increases. Even affordable
housing units are not affordable when people are expected to pay close to $2,000 per month to live there. How
do we expect to lessen the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Santa Ana when a lot of people live in
crowded homes due to housing units being too expensive? How do we expect to lessen the number of people
losing their homes and becoming homeless when we dont offer the support needed to prevent this in the first
place? We need real solutions that actually support and care for the community. Santa Ana NEEDS REAL
PERMANENT RENT CONTROL NOW!
Thank you for your time.
Best,
Alondra Salazar
