Literacy Lab, a researched base program that
Girls Inc. has been delivering for six years, empowers at -risk girls with the skills to reach grade level reading by
fourth grade. The program is built around the five elements of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary,
and reading comprehension. All activities align with the California Common Core State Standards. Girls are
surrounded by dedicated staff and volunteer mentors who get them interested in reading and build their
confidence. Girls receive small group literacy training. There is one staff member for every group of 15 girls and
four volunteers. Literacy Lab not only helps girls gain necessary literacy skills, but also helps them gain self-
confidence, social emotional skills, and life skills. Threaded through every Girls Inc. program is the theme of strong
women. One -hundred percent of the reading material chosen has female protagonists. Through reading, girls learn
about courage, perseverance, tolerance, other cultures, and the world beyond them. They also learn about a
variety of subjects and careers, especially those that are non-traditional for women. As early as kindergarten, Girls
Inc. builds a pro -school, pro -college, and career environment.
The current Literacy Lab program has the highest number of volunteers of all Girls Inc. programs with over 200
volunteers giving over 1,000 hours of service to the program. This would increase to accommodate the four new
schools proposed.
Program activities include:
1. Reading aloud in small groups
2. Literacy activities that align with CA Common Core Standards for English Language.
3. Progress reports to parents three times per year and a group of workshops and activities to keep them
engaged in the program.
4.
