SANTA ANA COLLEGE
P.A.M SITE IMPROVEMENTS
PLAZA DE ARTES, AMPHITHEATER, CENTRAL MALL
On the surface, this project was about designing shade opportunities for existing spaces and
reinventing a public plaza to inspire the next generation of students. The larger goal however, was
to help the College establish realistic budgets for each of the work areas.
We were tasked to develop multiple design options for three spaces on campus; (1) Plaza
de Artes, (2) Amphitheater, and (3) Central Mall. Each area had it's own program goals and
challenges with existing conditions. Our Design Team had to do extensive homework on all
existing utilities to prepare schematic design packages that were detailed enough that reliable cost
estimates could be generated based on the assumed scope of work involved for each. Design
work included site layout and design, trellis and shade structure detailing using metal framing and
tension span fabric, and cost estimating that ranged from $600K of improvements for the central
mall to more than $7 million of improvements to build a custom amphitheater. We provided (2)
options for each work area along with 3D renderings of each space and detailed estimates of
probable costs. The District is now using these documents as a basis of design in an effort to
secure funding for each work area in the future.
20 CITY OF SANTA ANA: REP NO: 20-130
W1 STREET TRIANGULAR PARK RESTORATION
