In addition, graduates will <br />have received training in taking vital signs and <br />explaining procedures to clients. <br />PROGRAM OUTCOMES: <br />S Display the skills necessary to provide continued high -quality service. <br />8• Demonstrate a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology with a focus on the circulatory system. <br />Apply safety in the workplace, including infection control practices, biological hazards and wastes, electrical safety, fire safety, <br />radiation safety, chemical safety, first aid, and self-protection. <br />Perform the necessary clerical functions associated with Phlebotomy. <br />Collect a quality blood specimen for laboratory diagnostic purposes. <br />PHLE too j Phlebotomy 140 1 20 <br />220 <br />Externship <br />o 0 <br />40 <br />40 <br />1 40 20 <br />40 <br />Ioo <br />COURSE DESCRIPTIONS: <br />PHLE ioo — Phlebotomy — Students explore the legal and ethical aspects related to phlebotomy and learn about the duties and <br />responsibilities of a phlebotomist. Students examine various techniques used in venipuncture. Students study the unique factors <br />facing a phlebotomist, including safety for the patient and technician, and patient education. Focus is on complications in <br />obtaining blood in a variety of clinical situations. Students are introduced to California state requirements for a position as a <br />certified phlebotomist. In a Laboratory setting, students will perform venipuncture and capillary punctures on teaching aids and <br />after mastery, on consenting individuals. Students use infection control and Standard Precautions before, during, and after each <br />procedure. <br />PHLE 220 — Externship — This course will help students to finish the required numbers of phlebotomy procedures, mandated <br />by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Students will spend 4o hours in a real laboratory to fulfill the <br />requirements of their externship. <br />46 <br />
