i
[pan@>>EO
August 17, 2020
Via Email:
Re: Community Concerns on the City's Waste Hauling Contract
Dear Mayor and City Council,
We are writing to share our concerns about Santa Ana's proposal for the new waste and
recycling contract.
CLUE
iiiiitiii
GF.Fy GrtI ;q u.rW
Fe. F+oeo •Jauke
Athens Services has a record of being a bad employer and they fall short on environmental issues
as well. Athens has violated federal labor law for harassment and intimidation of workers,
denying them high standards and dignity and respect in the workplace.
We cannot have a waste hauler that mistreats their workers, whose labor ensures that they are
able to provide for their families. We believe that every person should be treated with dignity
and respect. Every worker should have a voice on the job without fear of retaliation. The waste
worker is a critical part of the Santa Ana community. Their work has dignity, and makes life
better for all of society.
In addition, Athens relies on mixed waste processing which decreases recycling rates and
contaminates more waste and recyclable materials. For decades, communities impacted by waste
facilities have witnessed the environmental and human costs related to landfilling. This is not the
kind of waste hauler we need in Santa Ana.
We urge you to reconsider and help move the waste industry into a high road industry that values
environmental responsibility, and prioritizes economic justice for the very workers who make it
all happen. As a city where a significant percentage of your constituents are working class
immigrants of color, it is important to select a hauler that provides good jobs, respects your
communities, and creates a bright future for its workers like you have now. The city of Santa
Ana MUST do better!
Sincerely,
Roxana Tynan
Executive Director
Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy
