From: The Santanero Project (thesantaneroproject@gmail.co@ <br />To: Santa Ana City Council <br />Mayor, Valerie Amezcua <br />Mayor Pro Tem, Jessie Lopez <br />Ward 1 Councilmember, Thai Viet Phan <br />Ward 2 Councilmember, Benjamin Vazquez <br />Ward 4 Councilmember, Phil Bacerra <br />Ward 5 Councilmember, Johnathan Ryan Hernandez <br />Ward 6 Councilmember, David Penaloza <br />RE: Including a Youth Center in the 2023-24 Budget <br />The purpose of this memo is to recommend the inclusion of a youth center in the FY 2023-24 <br />budget and to share the work we, the Santanero Project, have done over the past year: <br />Executive Summary <br />• Fund a youth center through the upcoming 2023-24 budget adoption <br />• Include youth up to age 20 in programming and center development <br />• Services: Mental Health Support/Therapy, DACA/Undocumented Youth Support Staff, <br />College & Career Readiness <br />• Location: Youth use public transportation to get around or walk & want a space close to <br />the center of the city <br />• Hours: May vary depending on the schedules of the youth but after school and weekend <br />hours will be beneficial <br />• Staff: College students who can be role models to youth, current high school students <br />who want to gain workforce experience and create a nurturing environment for their <br />peers <br />Reasons Santa Ana Needs a Youth Center <br />➢ High Population of Youth: Santa Ana is one of the youngest cities in Orange County, with <br />1 in 4 residents being less than 18 years old and a median age of 32.6 years old in 2020.1,2 <br />And yet, we have no city -funded youth center. While only 10 percent of Santa Ana's <br />residents are older than 65 years old, we have two city -funded senior centers: the Santa <br />Ana Senior Center and the Southwest Senior Center.
