PTAP2525: Clinical Experience I

<br />This full-time, six week, clinical affiliation will provide
<br />the student with initial exposure to the clinical setting.
<br />The PTA student will be under the direct supervision of
<br />a PT and/or PTA, This clinical affiliation allows students
<br />to practice patient care skills, document treatment
<br />techniques and enhance communication skills with all
<br />health care team members.

<br />This full-time, six week, clinical affiliation, will allow
<br />students to expand upon their previous clinical
<br />experience and incorporate the knowledge and skills
<br />from additional coursework. The student will be under
<br />the direct supervision of a PT and/or PTA. Emphasis Is
<br />placed on the student assuming a more active role with
<br />the rehabilitation team for the delivery of care.

<br />At the completion of this full-time, six week clinical
<br />affiliation, the student goal will be to perform as an
<br />entry-level physical therapist assistant. Students
<br />participate in this clinical experience under the
<br />supervision of a licensed physical therapist and/or
<br />physical therapist assistant,

<br />This course introduces the student to the role of a
<br />student, basic skills for success, nursing history, and
<br />trends; nursing ethics; legal aspects of nursing; practical
<br />relationships in healthcare, including the role of the
<br />practical/vocational and professional nurse; and
<br />nursing education.

<br />Students are introduced to nursing concepts and
<br />principles. Students are given an overview of the nurse -
<br />client relationship, principles of therapeutic
<br />communication, and cultural diversity among clients.
<br />Patient care is discussed through the life span,
<br />including care of the geriatric client. Death and dying
<br />concerns are introduced and discussed. Steps of the
<br />nursing process are presented as the framework for
<br />determining and meeting clients needs within the
<br />scope of practice,

<br />This course provides the student with the opportunity
<br />to learn and practice in the skills laboratory basic
<br />nursing principles and procedures related to meeting
<br />the daily needs of clients. Safety as a key element in
<br />care is introduced. The nursing process is integrated
<br />with an emphasis on all components using
<br />standardized nursing language. Nursing skills include
<br />gathering data related to vital signs, bed and bath of
<br />the client, skin care, standard precautions, asepsis,
<br />basic care procedures, and activities of daily living
<br />(ADU support skills, Documentation is emphasized in
<br />this course and the student is Introduced to providing
<br />appropriate client information. The nursing student is
<br />introduced to computers and the Windows
<br />environment. The student is given the skills necessary
<br />for Basic Life Support certification (Cardiopulmonary
<br />Resuscitation -CPR).

<br />This course covers principles and applications of whole
<br />numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio,
<br />proportions, measurements, statistics, basic algebra,
<br />and geometry. The metric system, the apothecary
<br />system, and conversion between systems are
