Gimme Shelter and a Pound of Advice <br />behavior. Many municipal shelters are "kill' shelters as their mandates often include <br />animal control. <br />Kitten Season <br />A busy time in the animal shelter world when feral and community cats have kittens. The <br />season occurs during warm weather months. Also referred to as cat breeding season. <br />Typically kitten season is March -October but varies from place to place and in some <br />areas is year-round. <br />Legal Retention <br />The number of days a shelter is required by law to hold an animal for recovery by owner <br />prior to placing the animal for adoption, for sale, or euthanizing. <br />Live Outcome Types <br />Adoption: an animal is adopted <br />Return -to -Owner: an animal is returned to the custody of their human/s. <br />Transferred -Out: an animal is transferred to the custody of another organization. <br />Trap. Neuter Return: an animal is returned to their habitat or community after being <br />treated for medical conditions, including spay/neuter. <br />Return to Field: putting an animal back where it was found, often as part of a TNR <br />program. <br />Live Release Rate (Asilomar Report) <br />Live Release Rate is the proportion of animals leaving the shelter alive to the total <br />number of animals leaving alive plus the number of shelter directed euthanized animals. <br />__Live__outcomes are usually achieved through adoption, reclaim by owner, transfer to <br />another agency or other life-saving actions <br />Other Outcome Types <br />_== Died in Care: any animal who died while in the custody of the shelter, not by euthanasia. <br />Euthanized/Kilied: any animal whose life was ended purposefully while in custody of the <br />organization. <br />Rescue Groups <br />Rescue Groups are often operated by a network of foster home -based volunteers that <br />may or may not be associated with a standing facility. These organizations often accept <br />- -- -- - ---difficult=to-adopt animals from other shelters and may transfer them or facilitate <br />adoptions outside of the shelter setting. <br />ORANGE COUNTY GRAND JURY 2022 1 2023 PAGE 49 OF 51 <br />
