<br />trade accounting for 66 percent of the decline (down 20,800 jobs). Wholesale trade
<br />dropped by 8,800 jobs, and transportation, warehousing, and utilities decreased by 1,800
<br />jobs. Professional and business services declined by 29,200 jobs. Administrative and
<br />support services, which includes temporary help firms, dropped by 18,900 jobs.19

<br />
<br />In December 2020, as
<br />California moved slowly
<br />toward reopening, regional
<br />differences contributed to the
<br />pace of recovery. The depth of
<br />job losses and Orange
<br />County’s reliance on service
<br />sectors meant the region
<br />would have to make up more
<br />ground than other regions in
<br />the state. How quickly
<br />businesses reopened and how
<br />public health risks evolved
<br />contributed to their viability.
<br />The recovery pace was slower
<br />for sectors and companies that relied on in-person interaction. As of December 2020, the
<br />county recovered 142,800 nonfarm jobs, equivalent to 53% of the job losses since the
<br />pandemic recession. Most industries are experiencing incremental job gains monthly.
<br />Transportation, utilities, and construction jobs have exceeded pre-pandemic levels, with
<br />the largest month-over increase, up 4,200 jobs. Wholesale trade gained 1,800 jobs, retail
