Public Works Agency <br />www.santa-ana.org/public-works <br />Item # 32 <br />City of Santa Ana <br />20 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana, CA 92701 <br /> Staff Report <br />May 16, 2023 <br />TOPIC: Ceremonial Street Naming Ordinance <br />AGENDA TITLE <br />Ordinance Amending Article XI of Chapter 33 of the Santa Ana Municipal Code (Streets <br />Sidewalks and Public Works) Related to Ceremonial Street Naming <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br />Approve first reading of an ordinance amending Article XI of Chapter 33 of the Municipal <br />Code relating to ceremonial street naming. <br />DISCUSSION <br />On August 2, 2022, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. NS 3024 to recognize <br />outstanding individuals or events that have made a significant impact on the community <br />through the commemorative or honorary naming of streets or intersections. <br />Subsequently, on January 17, 2023, the City Council expressed an interest in amending <br />the ordinance. As drafted, the amendment to the ordinance (Exhibit 1) limits the number <br />of City blocks and number of honorary topper signs that can be implememented to be <br />able to maximize the opportunity to honor Santa Ana individuals or events deserving of <br />recognition. <br />The proposed amendments to the ordinace are as follows: <br />1. Limit the number of city blocks to a maximum of two contiguous blocks on a <br />single street that can be designated to recognize individuals or events. <br />2. Limit the number of citywide streets to one street that can be designated to <br />recognize individuals or events. <br />3. Limit the number of sign toppers to two total sign toppers that shall be installed <br />on either end of the section of street designated for the commemorative or <br />honorary street naming. <br />To continue to allow for the recognition of individuals or events that are of particular <br />importance to the City of Santa Ana or have made significant contributions to improving <br />the quality of life in the City, the proposed ordinance (Exhibit 1) amends Article XI of
