City Council
www.santa-ana.org/city-council
Item # 30
City of Santa Ana
20 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana, CA 92701
Staff Report
September 6, 2022
TOPIC: Police Officer Response to Calls
TITLE
Discuss and Consider Directing City Manager to Direct Staff to Draft a Revision of SAPD
Policy to Require Officers to Update Calling Parties Upon Resolution of Calls For Service
DISCUSSION
Mayor Pro Tem Bacerra added the following councilmember requested item:
In response to concerns received from residents that they did not witness and/or were not
aware of Santa Ana Police responding to calls for service, City Council shall discuss
whether to update SAPD policy to require police officers that respond to a call for service
to contact the calling party and notify them that the call has been addressed.
Currently, SAPD Policy 308 – “Officer Response To Calls” does not provide that officers
are required to contact the calling party and notify them that the call has been addressed.
Updating SAPD policy to require police officers that respond to a call for service to contact
the calling party will provide transparency and accountability that the call has been
addressed and will present opportunities to directly provide customer service to calling
parties, such as residents and business owners.
This item was discussed with Kristine Ridge, City Manager, and David Valentin, Santa
Ana Police Department Chief.
Submitted By: Mayor Pro Tem Phil Bacerra
