Parks, Recreation, and Community Services <br />www.santa-ana.org/parks <br />Item # 27 <br />City of Santa Ana <br />20 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana, CA 92701 <br /> Staff Report <br />May 3, 2022 <br />TOPIC: Resolution Approving the Acceptance Grant Funds from the State of California <br />AGENDA TITLE: <br />Resolution Approving the Acceptance of Grant Funds from the State of California in the <br />Amount of $4,000,000 to the General Fund <br />RECOMMENDED ACTION <br />Adopt a resolution approving the acceptance of grant funds from the State of California <br />in the amount of $4,000,000 to the General Fund for the Zoo Educational Hub and <br />installation of a Universally Accessible Playground at Thornton Park. <br />DISCUSSION <br />Senator Tom Umberg has secured funding in this year's (FY 2021-22) state budget <br />tailored to addressing the unique and unprecedented challenges facing Orange County <br />communities. <br />The state budget is a series of important funding and policy decisions voted on through <br />several budget bills. In preparation for this round of negotiations, Senator Umberg <br />collaborated with local and statewide leaders and other members of the legislature to <br />deliver millions of dollars of relief to communities. Through the COVID-19 pandemic, <br />natural disasters, and several other hurdles, he diligently working to help bring much- <br />needed and deserved funding to local programs in the 34th Senate District. <br />As part of the Fiscal Year 2021-2022 State of California budget, Senator Tom Umberg <br />was able to secure $6,040,000 in General Fund monies for the City of Santa Ana <br />($4,000,000) and Discovery Science Center Orange County ($2,040,000) for Santa Ana <br />youth facilities. The State will enter into agreements separately with both agencies. Below <br />is a summary of the City of Santa Ana projects that will be funded. <br />Zoo Education Hub: “The Hive” - Education Hub Building at Santa Ana Zoo <br />The project goal is a building including a flex space, classroom(s), and hub for community <br />volunteers and education staff. The classrooms are flexible in design and layout to <br />maximize their use potential throughout the day and year. The facility would use <br />environmentally sustainable materials in its construction. This facility will serve as a <br />reception area for schoolchildren coming to the zoo and is directly adjacent to the existing
