Dear Santa Ana City Council, I am not surprised — but I am very disturbed to see — just how far the proposed Resolution "In Solidarity with the Palestinian People in Support of a Ceasefire" repeats hackncvcd canards, displays a lack of historical knowledge, distorts facts in the sernrice of blind and blinding anti -Zionism. Its very title (which does not read in support of the Palestinian and Israeli people") attests to its prejudice, its intentions, its agenda. I urge you to defeat this proposed Resolution. Following the order of the proposed Resolution, I will address its claims. The proposed Resolution references "a relentless and ongoing campaign of airstrikes on the people of Gaza." Israel is not bombing "the people of Gaza." Israel is bombing Hamas. Hamas, using the people of Gaza as human shields, is responsible for each and cvcry death, cvcry dismemberment, cvcry injury. The Israeli Defense Force warns the people of Gaza of upcoming bombings. Extraordinary! Hamas prcvcnts the people of Gaza from cvacuating a Hamas-created combat zone. Hamas holds the whole civilian Gazan population hostage. At the risk of its own soldiers, the IDF proNrides protection for fleeing refugees — protection from Hamas! Israel does not occupy Gaza. Israel withdrew from Gaza in 2005. Israel has no citizens, no police, no armor, no court, no judge in Gaza. The proposed Resolution need be at least historically, geo-politically accurate. As to the blockade, should Israel stand idly by while Hamas ships into Gaza tons of weapons, including missiles to fire at Israel? The proposed Resolution is naive in the extreme. The proposed Resolution uses hideously inflammatory, propagandistic language to distort reality. Israel is simpler not an apartheid state. (see mar article in The Algemeiner of January 12 2021, "Whose Human Rights? BIDS Is Antisemitic and Harms Palestinians"). The proposed Resolution, in assuming such unsubstantiated claims of apartheid, falls prcv to slanderous tropes. It perpetuates them. The proposed Resolution cites "UN reports" claiming that Israel's bombing has displaced 1.6 million Palestinians. It says nothing about the estimated 250,000 Israelis displaced by the Oct. 711, terrorist attack and by the continuing onslaught of missile attacks from Gaza and from Hezbollah. This kind of selective information constitutes a sin of omission. Not surprisingly, it speaks of one suffering; it ignores the other. This rhetorical manipulation belies a hidden agenda. If, in the sloganeering language of the proposed Resolution, Gaza is the world's "largest open-air prison," who made it so? Israel did not create the necessity of the "enclosure of Gaza's borders." Hamas's relentless aggression against Israel built those concrete walls, those barbed wire fcnccs.
