It is within
the North Focus Area as identified in the South Main Street Vision Plan (SMVP) and
involves converting the street Right-of-Way (ROW) along a section of Walnut Street,
from Main Street to the Court Avenue alley, to greenway and public open space.
The SMVP, covering a two-mile length of Main Street and periphery areas, was adopted
by City Council in 2016 following an extensive community outreach process with a
purpose to revitalize the area to enhance the residential and business communities
along the Main Street Corridor. The Walnut Street project was identified in the SMVP in
response to a community call for open space which does not currently exist in the area.
Improvements identified in the SMVP directly on Main Street were implemented in
2022-2023 as part of a complete street improvement project. However, the Open Space
and Arts components were not included at that time due to budget limitations.
