Alcala, Abigail
From:Majed Alterawi <noreply@adv.actionnetwork.org>
Sent:Friday, December 22, 2023 7:53 PM
To:eComment
Subject:Support a Ceasefire Resolution
E-comment ,
It is with profound sorrow that I must convey my profound dismay regarding the recent
decision to oppose the essential resolution advocating for unity with the Palestinian People in
their quest for a ceasefire. As a deeply concerned community member, I am reaching out to
implore your support.
The funds from our taxes, which could be utilized for the betterment of our own communities,
are instead contributing to Israel's continued acts of aggression against the Palestinian
people. Renowned global experts have observed that the rate of casualties in Gaza is
surpassing even the most lethal phases of the U.S.-led conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan,
conflicts which have faced extensive condemnation from human rights organizations.
The dire circumstances in Gaza call for our urgent focus and intervention. The persistent
conflict has resulted in the loss of 20,000 innocent lives, predominantly women and children,
leading to a humanitarian disaster of unprecedented scale. Individuals are succumbing to
starvation, facing lethal force from Israeli troops, and experiencing unimaginable horrors such
as being buried alive under bulldozed buildings.
Santa Ana has a long-standing history of leading in matters of social justice. In light of this, it
becomes all the more crucial for the council to manifest its support for the Palestinian people
and advocate for the cessation of this tragic violence.
The refusal of the ceasefire resolution extends beyond a mere political debate; it touches
upon the core of our ethical obligations. Ignoring the plight of the Palestinian people or
allowing political discourse to overshadow the pressing need for peace and justice is
unconscionable. We, as a community, bear the responsibility to ensure that Santa Ana does
not endorse or facilitate any acts of violence or suppression, particularly when local groups
face potential backlash and hate crimes for their support of Palestine.
93
