SECTION VII <br />VINES <br />Vines shall be encouraged to grow and flourish by continually maintaining proper care in accordance with AHS <br />Standards. <br />A. General Specifications <br />1. Vines and espalier plants shall be checked and removed as needed to allow for proper growth. <br />The contractor shall secure vines with appropriate ties to promote directional growth on <br />supports. The contractor shall not use nails to secure vines on masonry walls. <br />2. Pruning of vines shall be in accordance with good horticultural practices, as defined by the AHS <br />Standards 'Pruning and Training' manual, latest edition. <br />3. Vines shall be pruned only to allow for new growth to develop and to control/direct plant size. <br />4. No more than 1/3rd of the vines should be pruned at any given time unless directed by the CR. <br />5. The contractor shall have deep water vines in pockets not provided with sprinklers, as required <br />to promote optimum growth. <br />6. Weed control shall be applied monthly to control all emergent weeds. In some instances, weeds <br />may be removed by mechanical means as approved by the CR. <br />a. The use of pre -emergent is strongly recommended to control broadleaf and grassy weeds. <br />7. Any paper or litter that accumulates in vines and surrounding areas shall be picked up daily. <br />8. Mulch shall be applied to all planting areas two (2) times per year, as necessary, once in the <br />spring (Apr -Jun), and again in the fall (Sep -Nov). <br />9. Vines shall not be allowed to grow past the designated area. All areas explored by the vine <br />outside of the planting area shall be removed at the Contractor's expense. Any structural <br />damage done by excessive vine growth shall be restored within one (1) week at Contractor's <br />expense. <br />RFP 23-151 Landscape Maintenance Services Page 46 of 135 <br />
