SECTION VI <br />SHRUBS <br />The primary objective for maintaining shrubs and other plant material within the City's landscape is to create <br />a natural, aesthetically pleasing appearance throughout all areas. Shrubs to include and not limited to cacti <br />and succulents and other plant material shall be pruned only to allow new growth to develop within the confines <br />of planters and beds and should have soft rounded edges in most applications. The use of powered equipment <br />must be approved before use. <br />A. General Specifications <br />1. Shrubs shall be pruned quarterly, or as required, for safety, removal of broken or diseased <br />branches, general containment, and appearance. <br />2. Shrubs shall be pruned, as required, to ensure vehicular and pedestrian visibility and <br />clearance. <br />3. All bare ground shrub areas, not inter -planted with ground cover, shall be cleaned a <br />minimum of one (1) time per month. Cleaning shall be accomplished without removing <br />significant amounts of any present mulch. <br />4. Plant material encroaching onto or from City property shall be trimmed back to the property <br />line. At City's discretion, depending on circumstance, plants growing over fences and <br />sidewalks from private property adjacent to contracted areas will also be trimmed back to <br />the property line. <br />5. All gasoline -powered equipment used for pruning shrubs shall be approved by the CR. <br />6. Ailing, stunted, and/or dead shrubs, as a result of circumstances beyond the Contractor's <br />control, shall require a proposal for replacement within five (5) working days and shall be <br />restored within one (1) week of obtaining a signed proposal for Supplemental Work. <br />7. Shrubs requiring additional nutrients to correct deficiencies shall receive such nutrients, at <br />no additional cost to the City, within five (5) working days of discovery. <br />8. Shrub failure due to Contractor's neglect or improper treatment shall be replaced, at <br />Contractor's sole expense, with like -kind and -sized plants, within five (5) working days. <br />9. The contractor shall prune shrubs according to accepted industry practices and consistent <br />with the intended use, as well as to retain as much of the natural informal appearance as <br />possible. Final standards will be the decision of the CR. <br />a. For accepted industry practices, t h e Contractor shall refer to the AHS <br />Standards 'Pruning and Training' manual, latest edition. <br />b. Shrubs used as formal hedges or screens shall be pruned as required to <br />present neat appearance. <br />c. The contractor shall remove any spent blossoms or dead flower stalks as <br />required for a neat, clean appearance. <br />d. Shrubs and mounding shall not exceed two (2) feet in height within areas <br />required for vehicular sight distance, depending on roadway topography. <br />10. The contractor shall apply approved herbicide monthly and/or as required to remove and <br />control broadleaf and grass weeds in and around all shrub beds. The use of pre -emergent <br />is strongly recommended and will be at Contractor's expense. In some instances, weeds <br />may be removed by mechanical means as approved by the CR. <br />11. Any paper or litter that accumulates in shrub bed areas shall be picked up daily. <br />RFP 23-151 Landscape Maintenance Services Page 44 of 136 <br />
