4. The contractor shall prune off lower branches high enough for traffic clearance. <br />5. The contractor shall cut out dead, crossing, rubbing branches, and v-shaped crotches. <br />6. The contractor shall undercut branches over two (2) inches in diameter before final cut is <br />made close to a scaffold (main) branch. Shredded, torn or ripped branches shall be re -cut <br />cleanly. <br />7. An exposed wound, as where a branch was removed, shall remain exposed. The <br />contractor shall not paint or apply any substance on wounds. <br />8. Trees close together shall be separated by the removal of intermingling branches. The <br />exception is a large hedge or windbreak consisting of one (1) species. <br />9. All newly planted or young trees shall be double -staked by the Contractor and secured <br />properly with CR-approved ties. <br />a. The contractor shall use only City -approved staking materials. <br />b. The contractor shall always remove nursery stakes on young trees and <br />replace them with double staking when trunk strength allows. <br />c. All stakes shall be set perpendicular to prevailing winds unless <br />designated otherwise by the CR. <br />d. Tree stakes shall beset a consistent distance (minimum six [6] inches) away <br />from the trunk of the tree to reduce abrasion. <br />e. The tops of tree stakes shall be removed approximately three (3) inches <br />above the highest tie to reduce abrasion of the main or lateral branches of <br />the tree. <br />10. A tree too heavy for support by stakes shall have equally -spaced guy wire ties to stakes <br />and shall be inspected for possible removal. The wire shall be on a 45-degree angle with <br />the tree trunk. <br />a. Locations for the use of guy wires shall be determined by the CR. <br />b. Ties shall always allow for tree movement between stakes and tree trunk. <br />c. The contractor shall loosen or remove tree ties upon discovery that ties are too <br />tight before ties girdle a branch or trunk. <br />d. The contractor shall remove stakes or tensioned cables (guy wires) from a tree <br />trunk that is immovable in wet soil. <br />11. Any tree stakes or ties that are broken, loose, or damaged shall be removed immediately. <br />If the tree is less than one (1) year old or immature and requires continued support, new <br />ties and stakes will be required. <br />12. Fertilizers, pre -approved by the CR, shall be applied to trees and shrubs that require <br />supplemental feeding. Annual spring feeding shall be done in accordance with the rate <br />indicated by the manufacturer. Fertilization may require deep root feeding or foliar <br />micronutrient applications. <br />13. All trees located in Casual, Sports/Priority Turf areas shall have 2" of STA approved 3"-4" <br />compost mulch installed around the tree ring continuously. <br />14. The Contractor shall have an ISA Certified Arborist On -call employee able to provide a risk <br />assessment. The contractor will only charge, AEW, the arborist time to investigate and create <br />a risk assessment.
