Dale Helvig
Resident, Santa Ana CA 92706
March 5, 2024
Mayor Amezcua and Santa Ana City Councilmembers
City of Santa Ana
20 Civic Center Plaza, 8th Floor
Santa Ana CA 92702
Subject: ITEM 18 — Consideration of Ceasefire Resolution
The following conflicts are active today:
Sudan: Over 7.3 million people forcibly displaced and over 10,000 deaths due to war.
These are human beings.
Somalia: Over 5.1 million people forcibly displaced and over half a million deaths due to civil war.
These are human beings.
Ethiopia: Over 3.4 million people forcibly displaced and over 600,000 deaths due to civil conflict.
These are human beings.
Democratic Republic of the Congo: Over 7.1 million people forcibly displaced and over 9 thousand
deaths due to conflicts. These are human beings.
Syrian: Over half a million deaths due to civil war. These are human beings.
Where is the support for ALL these human beings?
Discussing the Israel -Gaza issue is one thing, making it a resolution that represents all of Santa Ana is
entirely another issue. When talking about the tragedies related tht Israel -Gaza conflict, one council
member said these are all human beings when referring to the loss of life and injuries to woman and
children. The proposed resolution would be more appropriate if it objected to ALL conflicts.
There are so many conflicts around the world where people of all ages are being displaced and losing
their lives... several with which the United States is involved in one way or another. Is it the Santa Ana
City Council's job or moral obligation to weigh in on international conflict where the United States is
involved? I say no.
If the City Council doesn't take a stand on all of these conflicts, how is it to decide which ones are most
important? Does it have the time/resources/knowledge to thoroughly educate itself on all the related
issues in order to take a specific stand? The residents of this city are certainly not all of one opinion.
2024-03-05 Letter to City Council -Item 18-Ceasefire Resolution
