City of Santa Ana Emergency Operations Plan <br />Part I Basic Plan <br />San Andreas Fault Zone: The dominant active fault in California, it is the main element of the boundary between <br />the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. The longest and most publicized fault in California, it extends 750 <br />miles from Cape Mendocino in northern California to the Salton Sea in Imperial County, and is approximately 45 <br />miles northeast of Santa Ana. This fault was the source of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which resulted in <br />some 700 deaths and millions of dollars in damage. The southern section of this fault is currently of the greatest <br />concern to the scientific community. Geologists can demonstrate that at least eight major earthquakes (M 7.0 and <br />larger) have occurred along the Southern San Andreas Fault in the past 1200 years with an average spacing in <br />time of 140 years, plus or minus 30 years. The last such event on the Southern San Andreas was over 160 years <br />ago (the Fort Tejon Earthquake in 1857).
