COLLISION ANALYSIS <br />3.6 Analysis of Systemic Safety Needs <br />Figures 3-13 through Figure 3-15 show a tree diagram focused on <br />the fatal and serious injury collisions along roadway characteristics <br />throughout Santa Ana. The collision trees suggest that six -lane roads <br />as well as intersections present the greatest risk of collisions. These <br />systemic safety concerns demonstrate that as more lanes exist, so <br />does the chance of a collision resulting in a fatality or serious injury. <br />More lanes typically have more cars and higher speeds, increasing the <br />quantity and severity of collision. <br />3.7 Collision Summary <br />People biking and walking, especially people with visual impairments <br />or other disabilities, are the most vulnerable roadway users. Though <br />there are more automobile collisions, pedestrian and bicyclist involved <br />collisions are more likely to be involved in serious injury or fatal colli- <br />sions, and they are disproportionately represented in all collisions. Of <br />pedestrian collisions over the past five years, 16% resulted in serious <br />injuries or fatalities and 5.5% for all bicycle collisions, whereas only 2% <br />of automobile collisions resulted in a serious injury or fatality. <br />Figure 3-16 illustrates the Santa Ana corridors with moderately -high to <br />high injuries involving pedestrians, bicyclists, and vehicles. These corri- <br />dors have the highest collision rates and injury severities collision rates <br />and injury severities. Consequently, these have been categorized as <br />safety corridors that merit consideration for measures that can help <br />improve their safety for all. <br />The methodology for this analysis involved joining each collision to <br />the nearest street segment to quantify the number of collisions and <br />severity of injuries that have occurred at different locations along a <br />corridor. Each injury was given a `score' as noted in the list below. Each <br />road segment's score was then summed together for a total score per <br />corridor.
