TOOLBOX OF POTENTIAL STREET IMPROVEMENTS <br />walk. The mountable area slows motor vehicles while allowing large <br />trucks to traverse the mountable area with their rear wheels. A corner <br />radius reduction is similar to a truck apron but instead of a 3-inch high <br />mountable area, the addition is built at the height of the sidewalk. <br />Chicanes / Roadway Curvature <br />Chicanes are a series of narrowings or curb extensions that alternate <br />from one side of the street to the other forming an S-shaped path of <br />travel on a roadway. Chicanes reduce drivers' speeds by causing them <br />to shift their horizontal path of travel. <br />Hardened Centerlines <br />Hardened centerlines are flexible delineator posts or raised speed <br />humps placed along the yellow centerline at an intersection to block <br />the diagonal path through the intersection and encourage drivers to <br />turn left at a slower speed. <br />Pedestrian Refuge Island <br />Refuge islands provide pedestrians and bicyclists a relatively safe <br />place within an intersection and midblock crossing to pause and ob- <br />serve before crossing the next lane of traffic. <br />Raised Crosswalk or Speed Table <br />Speed tables are flat-topped road humps, often constructed with tex- <br />tured surfacing on the flat section. Speed tables and raised crosswalks <br />help to reduce vehicle speeds and enhance pedestrian safety. Fire <br />Departments tend to prefer speed tables since they can be made to <br />accommodate emergency services vehicles. <br />Reduced Conflict Intersection (RCI) <br />This intersection design prohibits through movement and left turns <br />from the side streets, only permitting a right turn in or a right turn out, <br />known as "Right In Right Out" (RIRO). To continue straight or to make <br />a left turn from the side street, cars must first turn right and then make <br />the nearest U-turn.
