TOOLBOX OF POTENTIAL STREET IMPROVEMENTS <br />a utility company right of way or a Park's Department right of way. <br />Class II: Bicycle lanes <br />Bicycle lanes are one-way facilities that carry bicycle traffic in the same <br />direction as the adjacent motor vehicle traffic. They are typically locat- <br />ed along the right side of the street (although can be on the left side) <br />and are between the adjacent travel lane and curb, road edge, or park- <br />ing lane. They are not physically separated from motor vehicle traffic. <br />Class III Bicycle Routes <br />A bicycle route is a suggested bicycle corridor marked by signs des- <br />ignating a preferred street between destinations, usually residential <br />streets. They are recommended where traffic volumes and roadway <br />speeds are 35 mph or less. Traffic calming is included as needed to <br />discourage drivers from using the street as a through route. <br />Class IV: Separated Bikeways <br />Separated bikeways, sometimes called cycle tracks, are on -street bicy- <br />cle facilities with a physical separation between the bikeway and vehi- <br />cle travel lanes usually with flexible posts, planters, or poured concrete. <br />Often times, Class IV bikeways are parking -protected, where parked <br />cars offer a buffer from traveling cars. Class IV facilities differ from Class <br />I facilities because they are only for bicyclists as pedestrians general- <br />ly are given a parallel sidewalk. Consequently, Class IV bikeways are <br />usually preferable to Class I facilities. Class IV bikeways usually use <br />street right of way, which is different than Class I facilities. For Class IV <br />facilities on the approach to intersections, the bike facility needs to be <br />adjacent to the sidewalk, and in between the right turn lane and the <br />sidewalk if a right turn lane exists. Ideally the intersection would be a <br />Protected Intersection, giving added protection to the bicyclists. <br />Edge Lane Roads or Advisory Bicycle Lanes <br />An edge lane road is a preferred space for bicyclists and motorists to <br />operate on narrow streets that would otherwise be a shared roadway. <br />Roads with edge lane road markings accommodate low to moderate <br />volumes of two-way motor vehicle traffic and provide a more comfort- <br />able, safer space for bicyclists without widening of the paved roadway <br />Class lll: Bicycle Route, Source: Mia Burk <br />Edge Lane Road, Source: Wash Cycle <br />SANTAANA VISION ZERO PLAN 83 <br />
