<br />The external walls of all buildings used for the sale,
<br />storage or manufacture of merchaudise, office buildings,
<br />livery, boarding and sales stables and all public build-
<br />ings txaz and all other buildings over four stories in
<br />height shall be of a thickness not less than that indicated
<br />by the following table.

<br /> In private stables and residences (not
<br />not exceeding 15OO ft.of ground area, 13 inch walls may be
<br />used in the basement and first story, and 9 inch walls on
<br />second story, provided that no 9 inch wall shall be of great-
<br />er length than 50 ft. or a greater height than 10 ft. without
<br />cross walls or return angles, piers or buttresses to stiffen
<br />
<br /> Buildings over 100 ft. in length shall have the side
<br />and bearing walls increased ~½ inches in thickness over that
<br />specified in the above tables, for each additional 100 ft.
<br />or fraction thereof in length unless such walls =re strength-
<br />ened by proper piers or buttresses.
<br /> In any horizontal section in any wall, if there shall
<br />be more than 505 of openings, then such walls shall be in-
<br />creased at least 4½ inches in thickness and the walls below
<br />increased proportionately.
<br /> In all walls, the same amount of material indicated by
<br />the tables may be used in piers, pilasters or buttresses,with
<br />proper filler walls between, or have hollow walls, but when
<br />such construction is employed, it shall be subject to the
<br />approval of the building inspector.
<br /> Nine inch filler walls may be pcrmitted in one story
<br />buildings if strengthened by not less than 13 X 17 lnch piers
<br />spaced not more than 17 ft. on centers. All hollow walls
<br />shall be properly bonded together with brick, steel and terra
<br />cotta or with galvanized iron or steel ties not over three
<br />feet apart in any direction.
<br /> When an offset or corbel is used in a wall, a
<br /> chimney of masonry construction, the offset shall not exceed
<br /> 1 inch for each course of brick.
<br /> Furred masonry walls shall be provided with fire
<br /> stops at each floor, and at least one point intermediate
<br /> between the floors. When a chimney breast is furred out,the
<br /> space between the chl=mey and the breast shall be so built
<br /> that the passage of fire and smoke shall be prevented.
<br /> All girders and joists shall be so anchored to the
<br /> walls and to each other, as to make a continuous tie from
<br /> wall to wall in each direction. The beams may be united by
<br /> suitmble iron ties of not less than 1/2 inch sectional area
<br /> spiked, bolted or so fastened as to develop the full strength
<br /> of the tie, Wall anchors may be in the form of cast plates
<br /> with lugs turned up into the beams and with a lug extending
<br /> down into the brick work at least 4 inches at a point in the
<br /> brick work not more than 4 inches from the outer face of the
<br /> wall, or 5/g inch round anchors may be used as hereinafter
<br /> required for Joists. Joist anchors shall be of 5/8 inch
<br /> round iron at least 18 inches long with 5/8 X lO inch "T"
<br /> head or a 6 X 6 inch iron washer not less than 3/$ inch
<br /> thick securely fastened to the end. Such head or washer to
<br /> be not more than 4 inches from the outside of the wall. All
<br /> amchors shall go through walls where possible. The inner
<br /> ends of the anchors shall be securely tied to the beams or
<br /> joists in such a way as to make the anchor self-releasing.
<br /> Inner ends of joists may be spiked for a continuous tie.
<br /> When joists run approximately parallel with the
<br /> walls, they shall be anchored to the walls with anchors of
<br /> a cross section of at least 1/2 square inch in sectional
<br /> area. These anchors to exten~ over at,least the Second joist
<br /> from the wall, and to be fastened in the walls in the same
<br /> manner as described for the anchors above,
<br /> Anchors shall not be more than 8' apart in all
<br /> walls, and at each tier of joists above the first tier.
<br /> Fire walls shall be anchored as described under
<br /> fire walls. Where iron or steel girders are used, they
<br /> shall be anchored back into the wall securely with anch(~s
