194 <br /> <br /> Every passenger elevator car or hoist shall be provided <br />with proper automatic apparatus to prevent its falling in case <br />of ~ccident. Immediately below the shaft beams of elevators <br />there shall be placed a strong metal netting of not less than <br />3/16" round iron and having a mesh not exceeding 2" and above <br />this neeting there shall be a light wire netting not exceeding <br />3/8" mesh, all of which must be properly and firmly supported. <br /> Every elevator and its carrying beams and cables shall <br />have a capacity of not lees than 100 pounds to the sq. ft. of <br />caged floor, and a factor of safety of 10. Every elevator <br />must be provided with am automatic device which will stop the <br />car at the top and bottom floors and with safety devices which <br />will bring the car to a stop in case of excessive speed or fai- <br />lure in any part of the apparatus. <br /> When enclosed shall have enclosures meeting the require- <br />ments as given above for passenger elevators and when not en- <br />closed trap doors shall be provided at each floor which sh~l <br />close automatically or be held back by fusible links so arranged <br />as to allow the doors to fall shut when links are fused. Such <br />trap doors must be covered with lock jointed tin or metal on <br />the underside. <br /> Dumb waiters shall be enclosed in a sahft of the same <br />construction as required for elevators or the shaft may be of <br />metal or metal lining and in any case all openings to such <br />shafts shall be provided with doors or curbs. <br /> In Class ~A" "B" or "C" buildings must be of the same <br />constructiona as required for dumb waiter shafts. <br /> Class "A" "B" or "C" buildings must be constructed to <br />meet the requirements o£ dumb waiter shafts, but if thoroughly <br />fire stopped at each floor, doors will not be required over <br />openings, otherwise standard fire doors must be provided at each <br />opening. <br /> In Class "A" "B" or "C" buildings must be of fireproof <br />construction. In case of "B" or "~" constructed buildings metal <br />lath and plaster or metal lining will be construed as meeting the <br />requirements. Vents from coolers or stove hoods or any vents <br />if cut through from floor to floor in buildings of any class other <br />than residences, must be construed to meet these requirements. <br />Vents from coolers must not open into mir shafts in which any bath <br />room or toilet room opens. <br /> No stairway shall surround or run alongside of an e~vator <br />shaft or open hole unless separated from the s~me by a partition or <br />wall of fire proof materials, or unless there is in the same <br />building another stairway not adjacent to an elevator shaft or <br />well hole, and in no case shall any floor of more than 10,000 sq.ft. <br />area having less than two stairways from the top floor to the <br />second floor. Where two stairways are required in any building <br />they shall be placed as far as possible from each other. <br />Class "B" and "C" buildings shall have ~ne main stairway not less <br />than 4' O" wide fromth¢ first to the hiEhest story, and in any <br />building having more than 6000 sq. ft. area on any floor there <br />shall be not less than two stairways, from the top to the second <br />floor, and there shall be in any case one permament flight of <br />steps not less than 2' 8" wide to the roof. Every basement ~ed <br />for the exhibition for the sale cf goods at retail shall be <br />provided with a separate stairway at least 5' in width, for every <br />5000 sq. ft. of floor area thereof in such basements and such <br />stairways shall be without winders and must have a hand rail on <br />each side and shall be as far removed from each other as possible <br />and shall have aisles of at least the width of the stairway <br />connecting the stairways which shall be kept open and free from <br />obstruction of all kinds. <br /> In all warehouses ar, d factories, the stair or stairs <br />shall be enclosed in the same manner as required for elevator <br />shafts, except that open stairs may be permitted from the first <br />to the second floor for ornamental effect. All door openings in <br />such stair enclosures shall be provided with standard self closing <br />or automatic fire doors. And all window openings shall be pro- <br />teoted as required for elevator shafts, At least one of such <br />enclosed stair walls in each building shall have a simils~ con- <br />structed enclosed hallway on the first story extending to the <br />street. Any hotel building having an area requiring more th~ <br />one stairway shall have at least one such continuous and enclosed <br />stairway, and stairways from the first floor to any basement <br />or portion thereof which is used for storage or for the mainte- <br />nance of service for the hotel shall be enclosed as specified <br />above. <br /> In Class D buildings, I. used for storage only, <br />one stairway will be required 3' 6" wide, extending from top <br />to bottom floor. <br /> Pent houses and bulk heads used for the enclosure <br />of tan~s, the machinery of elevators, and all other pent houses <br />or structure or building not over ~ stories in height, may be <br />constructed of wood covered with metal, provided their height <br />shall not exceed 10' O" nor their superficial area ten per cent <br />of the area of the building. Any such pent house, if within 3' <br />C" of a psmty or division fire wall, such wall must be carried <br />up 3' higher that. such structure for a distance of at least 3'0" <br />on each side. Where pent houses exceed the area given above, <br />they must be constructed entirely of fireproof material. <br /> Tanks having a capacity of over 500 gallons placed on <br />or above thc roof of any class "A" B"B or "C" building must be <br />supported by an iron,steel or re-inforced concrete beam, the <br />ends of which must rest on masonry walls or other fireproof <br />construction. There must be a short outlet pipe in the bottom <br />of each tank with a valve not less than 4 inches in diameter, <br />which can be easily and quickly opened to drain the tank in ~ <br /> <br /> <br />
