Pipes used for conveying <br />live steam under high pressure shall in no case be brought <br />within g" of any woodwork, unless protected by a fireproof <br />pipe covering at least l" thick when the distance may be <br />decreased to not less than 2". <br /> All walls surrounding boiler room shall be of <br />masonry construction for their full height and the ceilings <br />of the entire room shall be either of fireproof construction <br />or metal lath and plaster. In Class "C" or "D" buildings <br />the walls may be made of metal lath and plaster. ~very <br />boiler room shall be provided with a sump hole or blow off <br />chamber and the water or steam from the boiler shall in no <br />case be allowed to blow or discharge direct to the sewer. <br />No wood shall be used in the construction of the floor of <br />any boiler room. Every boiler room shall be provided with <br />a stand pipe not less than 1½ inch in diameter with at <br />least 25'0" of fire hose of the same size attached. <br /> Any opening into a boiler room from the interior <br />of the building must be protected with a fireproof door <br />arranged to close automatically in case of fire and where <br />liquid fuel is used under thc boiler a sill of masonry must <br />be placed under the door at least 6" ~igh. <br /> In frame buildings where surface fire protection <br />is required, unless masonry con truction is specified, <br />metal lath plaster will be deemed to fulfill the requiremts <br />provided, that the metal lath is of at least 2g guage and <br />the plaster 3/4" thick. On emch building within the fire <br />limits on exterior windows opening above the first floor, <br />unless such windows face on street, or there is no building <br />within 50' 0", and excepting private dwelling houses and <br />churches, there shall be wire glass windows in metal Frames <br />or fireproof doors or shutters and such shutters must be <br />closed and fastened at the end of each day's business. <br /> Section 26. For the proper and necessmry pro- <br />tection of life and property, the following fire escapee <br />will be required: On every building any p~rt of which is <br />more than two stories high, that is occupied or designed <br />to be occupied above the first fl~or, for offices, work- <br />shops or public entertainments or assemblages or as a <br />theater, hospital, asylum, place of instruction, hotel, <br />rooming house or for manufacturing, shall be provided <br />with fire escapes as follows: Such fTre escapes to be <br />so placed as to be easily reached from doors or windows at <br />each story. All buildings over three stories in height <br />shall have a metallic standpipe in connection with every <br />fire escape as required above, and where there is more <br />than 5000 sq.ft, of floor area on any story above the <br />first, the building shall be equipped with an additional <br />fire escape for every 5000 sq.ft, or fraction thereof of <br />area. Buildings of class "A" construction not over 6 <br />stories in height and not used for manufacturing purposes <br />above the first floor, shall be exempt from the require- <br />ments of this section as to fire escapes. BefOr~any <br />permit shall be issued for any new building on which fire <br />escapes will be required by this section, the location <br />of every such fire escape shall be shown and shall be <br />approved by the chief of the fire department before permit <br />is issued. <br /> On buildings already erected which require a f~re <br />escape, before such fire escape is built, a permit shall be <br />obtained from the building inspector for which he shall <br />collect a fee of $1.00. Such application shall be made on a <br />blank to be furnished by the building inspector, and must <br />show the location of the building and the details of con- <br />struction of the fire escape, and such details of the con- <br />struotion of building, as may be required by the building <br />inspector to determine whether such fire escape is meeting <br />the requirements of this ordinance. Such permits will be <br />subject to the same provisions regarding commencing work and <br />forfeiture of permit as laid down in this ordinance in conn- <br />ection with regular building permits. <br /> It shall be unlawful tc occupy any portion of any <br />building above the second floor on which a fire escape is <br />required or where such fire escape has been installed and has <br />not been inspected and approved by the building inspector. <br /> If the building inspector shal~ Find upon inpsection <br />that any building is not properly provided tith fire escapes, <br />he shall notify the owners or the persons having charge of <br />such a building that fire escapes are required and such owner <br />or occupants shall have ten days in which to commence con- <br />struction of such fire escape and if such construction is not <br />started within ten days all parts of the building above the <br />second floor shall be vacated immediately. The posting of a <br />notice on the building in a conspicuous spot by the building <br />inspector sha~l be construed as meeting the requirements of <br />this section as to notification. <br /> Upon the completion of any fire escape notice <br />shall be given the building inspector and he shall inspect <br />such fire escapes and if he finds the same to beconstructed <br />in accordance with this ordinance he shall i~sue a certificate <br />to that effect without chmrge, but if such work shall have been <br />done without a permit first haeing been procured he shall <br />collect a fee of ~10.OO, and no fire escape shall be construed <br />as meeting the requirements of thi~ ordinance until such m <br />certificate has been issued. <br /> <br /> <br />
