RESOLUTION 65-155 HONORING THE MEMORY OF
<br />DR. RALPH C. SMEDLEY AND EXPRESSING THE
<br />APPRECIATION OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA, THE
<br />UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND THE SCATT~-RED
<br />GROUPS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD THAT HAVE BEEN
<br />INFLUENCED BY THIS GREAT MAN
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, DR. RALPH C. SMEDLEY, as Secretary of the Santa Ana
<br />YMCA, started a public speaking group of young men in 1924 to keep
<br />them off the streets and to improve their ability to express
<br />themselves, which group prospered and grew so that the following
<br />year DR. SMEDLEY started a second group in the City of Anaheim; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, his able leadership and the central validity of the
<br />organizational idea were so good that Toastmasters grew rapidly so
<br />that by 1938 there were one hundred individual clubs; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, after World War II the growth of Toastmasters
<br />continually amazed DR. SMRDLEY, it became Toastmasters International
<br />and spread throughout the world as an organization conceived by this
<br />great man and dedicated to "Better Listening, Thinking, Speaking",
<br />so that today there are more than 3,500 groups throughout the free
<br />world, and community, business, political, and industrial leaders
<br />have been and are increasingly being trained in the important art of
<br />communication, the use of man's greatest invention, language; and
<br />
<br /> WHEREAS, DR. SMEDLEY was granted a full life, he had the
<br />privilege of contributing an organizational idea that has benefited
<br />and is benefiting people in nearly every part of the free world,
<br />which has grown into Toastmasters International, now headquartered
<br />in Santa Ana, California, and thereby created his own enduring
<br />monummnt of public and individual service.
<br />
<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BITIT RESOLVED: That the City Council of the
<br />City of Santa Ana expresses for the City, the citizens of the City,
<br />the United States of America, and those people throughout the free
<br />world who have been influenced by the Toastmasters organization,
<br />their complete respect, appreciation, and thanks to DR. RALPH C.
<br />SMEDLEY for having been a part of our life and a growing beneficial
<br />influence wherever men are free to express their ideas.
<br />
<br /> PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Santa
<br />Ana at its regular meeting held on the 20th day of September, 1965.
