Executive Summary
Optical Access is pleased to provide this proposal to the City of Santa Ana for the purpose of
demonstrating our optical wireless access solutions. The Optical Access solution encompasses a
complete product line specifically designed for low-cost data/voice transport. Our existing
hardware can be scaled to support the incredible growth expected in data/voice traffic — from sub
1 Megabit per second speeds to over 1 Gigabit per second.
We believe that a review of our capabilities and robust wireless access solutions will validate
Optical Access as an efficient, cost-effective and comprehensive provider for the City's network
platform.
Key Elements (differentiators from our competition)
o Technology — Protocol independence, Scalability, Optical with RF Backup
o Experience —Applied knowledge
Technology
Optical Access focuses on free -space optical communications and layer 2 and layer 3 IP-
based switching technologies. Its current and near future products allow existing
networks (SONET, ATM..) to interface to the mesh network for backbone connectivity
or other types of applications. Optical Access' technical team has a long history and
experience in optical communication and networking technologies. With over 14 patents
in its intellectual property portfolio, Optical Access secured its leadership in the free -
space optical networking market.
Optical Access free -space optical communications technology includes extensive work
on short and long wavelengths to accommodate the market need in terms of data rates,
affordability, distances and link reliability. By incorporating the microwave backup link,
Optical Access provides its carrier -class customers with the required 99.999% link
availability.
Experience
One unique factor that distinguishes Optical Access from other free space laser
equipment providers is our wealth of applied knowledge. Optical Access has served free
space optical communications customers for over eight (8) years. With an installed base
of over 4500 links, Optical Access has encountered a wide variety of network
environments and building sites. Our engineering and product research efforts have been
driven by the practical experience gained in the'field. This has allowed us to produce
three generations of products specifically designed to overcome real world problems.
Additionally, our customer service technicians have had the opportunity to develop an
assortment of trouble shooting skills that can be used quickly and efficiently to expedite
rapid deployment and service recovery.
