RESOLUTION NO. 61-259 ASKING THE RESIDENTS AND <br />ORGANIZATIONS OF THE CO~4UNITY TO SUPPORT THE <br />WEEK OF NOVEMBER 19 TO 25 AS"MERCY WEEK" AND <br />NOVEMBER 23 AS "MERCY DAY" <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, on October 29, 1960, 17 young men, examples of the <br />best of American youth, all members of the California State Polytechnic <br />College football team, were killed and 23 others injured in a tragic <br />plane crash soon after take-off at the Toledo, Ohio, airport; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in addition to the overwhelming burden of grief that <br />has been borne by the loved ones of those lost, the parents, brothers <br />and sisters, and, in so~e cases, the wives of those killed and <br />injured, now face unpaid bills totaling more than $200,000 for funeral <br />expenses, doctors, hospital bills, and other services; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, at 11:00 A.M. on November 23, 1961, Thanksgiving <br />Day, the Mercy Bowl Game, so-called because of the worthwhile nature <br />of the project, will .be played at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum <br />for the purpose of raising sufficient money to take care of the <br />re~aining funeral and medical bills, and to provide scholarships for <br />the children of those killed; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in order that a minimum of $200~000 may be realized <br />from the Mercy Bowl Game, every possible effort is being made to <br />eliminate production costs (example: no rental will be charged by <br />the Coliseum Commission for use of the stadium; even ticket takers <br />and ushers will donate their services for the day and each, in <br />addition, will purchase an admission ticket for himself). <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED By the City Council of the <br /> <br />City of Santa Aha that the week of November 19--25, 1961, be observed <br />as "MERCY WEEK"; that Thursday, November 23, 1961, be observed as <br />"M~RCY DAY" in Santa Ana, California; and that organizations and <br />citizens in the City support this worthwhile humanitarian project. <br /> <br />-1- <br /> <br /> <br />
