Dear Mayor Amezcua and Councilmembers, My name is Shivani Mohapatra and I am encouraging you to oppose the resolution under Agenda Item 18 at the City Council Meeting on February 18. According to data from CalEnviroScreen 4.0, the City of Santa Ana faces a disproportionate amount of Orange County's pollution burden. Proposed Rules 1111 and 1121 would make great strides towards addressing public health in the city. By electrifying gas appliances such as furnaces and water heaters,the city can reduce residents' exposure to toxic NOx emissions that result in asthma, lung cancer, and cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, there are a number of programs that make installation of electric appliances more affordable for working families. The state's HEEHRA program offers families between $4,000- $8,000 for installation costs, and South Coast AQMD's Go Zero program provides $1,500 in rebates for water heaters and heat pumps. Electric appliances are not a burden to Santa Ana residents -they are a public health benefit that is more within reach than ever. Please oppose the resolution under Item 18.
