18400 Von Karman Ave Ste 600 Irvine,CA 92612 949.252.1022 kpff.com lqjff
Santa Ana City Council
20 Civic Center Plaza
Santa Ana, CA 92701
February 18, 2025
RE: City Council Agenda Item #17— In support of THRIVE Santa Ana, Walnut and Daisy
Micro-Farm Project
Dear Mayor and City Council,
Please consider this letter in support of THRIVE Santa Ana Community Land Trust, the Walnut
and Daisy Micro-Farm, as part of your Public Hearing, item #17 on today's City Council Meeting
agenda.
This anecdote is from the structural engineer on this project— Erik Sanchez (SAUSD graduate,
born/raised & homeowner in Santa Ana). THRIVE's project has taught us that welding re-
purposed shipping containers together can create stronger structure; that the footing under each
corner of each container shall not block the path of plumbing lines. These lessons learned were
taught to Valley High School students who are part of the after-school architecture construction
and engineering (A.C.E.) program when they visited the construction site on a field trip. These
students are interested in construction trades and design. Students also learned about
community land trusts; a concept their A.C.E. LA/OC organization is seeing the rising popularity
of. So much so, that they've made CLTs the focus of this year's all-schools design competition.
CLTs are the future of LA/OC communities.
Projects like these trickle-down work and learning to Santa Ana residents- from engineers to
organizers to vendors to artists to the youth. This project has also allowed us to channel
creativity in community mural painting the shipping container walls.
KPFF wants to thank the City of Santa Ana for supporting this exemplary project and others like
it.
Sincerely,
Erik Sanchez, Structural Engineer
KPFF
Cell:
E-Mail:
