RESOLUTION 70-40 REQUESTING THE LOCAL AGENCY <br />FORMATION COMMISSION TO APPROVE THE ANNEXATION <br />OF THE MARINE CORPS AIR STATION AREA TO THE <br />CITY OF SANTA ANA <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Marine Corps Air Station, Santa Ana, being <br />immediately adjacent to the easterly boundary of the City of <br />Santa Ana, has been for 25 years or more closely identified as <br />a military facility associated with our City; and <br /> <br /> W}{EREAS, the Marine Corps Air Station, Santa Ana, has for <br />many years provided a large economic support for businesses in <br />our City and at the present time provides millions of dollars <br />per year to our economy; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the association of the Marine Corps Air Station <br />with the City of Santa Ana through the years has given us <br />nationwide prestige; and <br /> <br /> W~EREAS, the Air Station is the primary military training <br />location for helicopter personnel for the United States Marine <br />Corps and as such constitutes a continuing critically necessary <br />training facility for the safety of the entire nation; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in 1967 the City of Tustin permitted the construc- <br />tion of medium density apartment houses which eliminated use of <br />one of the last two air approach corridors to said facility; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the recent filing by a major private property owner <br />adjoining the northerly boundary of the Marine Corps Air Station <br />would force the closing of the sole remaining air approach corridor <br />through the rezoning and development of this land to apartment <br />house development with medium densities; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, recent statements attributed to high officials in <br />the private corporation owning this land under the remaining <br />approach pattern indicate the purpose of the company is to <br />eliminate the Air Station or to cause a cessation of its use; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the closure of this remaining aircraft approach <br />pattern would effectively destroy the utilization of the Marine <br />Corps Air Station for its original training mission; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, any attempt to relocate and duplicate the facilities <br />now in use at the Station would constitute an expenditure of over <br />$200,000,000 by the United States Government; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, annexation of the Air Station by the City of Santa <br />Ana is the only means by which the City can effectively exercise <br />its desire and intent to assist in every way in the preservation <br />of the Air Station and in exercising any influence upon the method <br />of development of the adjoining properties so as to permit the <br />continued utilization of the Station; <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That the City of Santa Ana <br />does hereby request the Local Agency Formation Commission to approve <br />the annexation of the Marine Corps Air Station to the City of Santa <br />ana. <br /> <br /> PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Santa Ana <br />at its regular meeting held on the 20th day of April, 1970~ <br /> <br /> MAYOR <br />CLERK OF THE COUNCIL <br /> <br />-1- <br /> <br /> <br />
