CITY OF SANTA ANA <br /> <br />SUPERVISOR OF INSPECTIONS <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />Under administrative direction, performs responsible overall supervisory <br />and technical work in the inspection and enforcement of building, hous- <br />ing, zoning and related regulations. <br /> <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Assigns, directs and reviews work of the supervising inspectors in a <br />comprehensive program of building inspection. Recommends and establishes <br />procedures and policies for field inspections. Determines appropriate <br />action in code violations. Explains and interprets the code enforcement <br />program to architects, engineers, contractors and the general public. <br />Assists in scheduling department work load and determining necessary <br />priorities. Evaluates current construction practices and technology for <br />the purpose of recommending appropriate code changes. Determines required <br />levels of inspection services and commensurate fee schedules. Investi- <br />gates and makes recommendations of new types of building materials. Con- <br />ducts difficult and complex field inspections. Determines status of major <br />projects nearing completion and coordinates conditional releases and <br />approvals. Develops and supervises the maintenance of inspection records <br />and plans and other departmental records. Prepares reports and corres- <br />pondence and supervises the conduct of special surveys of housing condi- <br />tions. Assists in the preparation of the departmental budget. Performs <br />related duties as assigned. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />The Supervisor of Inspections exercises considerable discretion in apply- <br />ing and interpreting building codes and regulations and in determining <br />administrative practices and procedures within established policy. He <br />coordinates and supervises the functions of the various inspection ser- <br />vices and acts for the Director of Building Safety and Housing in his <br />absence. <br /> <br />MINIMUM BASIC QUALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />Five years of responsible experience in structural design or building <br />inspection activities, two of which shall have been in a supervisory <br />code enforcement capacity. Supplementary, college level courses desirable. <br /> <br />DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES <br /> <br />Thorough knowledge of the uniform building code and of other state and <br />local laws regulating building construction. Knowledge of modern methods <br />of building construction and principles of structural design. Ability to <br />plan, schedule, coordinate and direct the activities of the various sec- <br />tions of inspection services. Knowledge of inspection principles, proce- <br />dures and methods. Ability to prepare clear and comprehensive written <br />reports. Ability to effectively interpret and communicate the terms <br />and requirements of pertinent regulations. Ability to conduct investiga- <br />tions and research in the area of building construction and inspection. <br />Ability to maintain effective working relationships with owners, builders, <br />subordinates and the general public. <br /> <br /> <br />
