CITY OF SANTA ANA <br /> <br />DEPUTY CITY ATTORNEY II <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />Under supervision to perform assigned professional legal work of average <br />difficulty in research, consultation, court trial and hearings. <br /> <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Performs necessary legal research in preparation for trial of both civil <br />and criminal cases and presents such cases in court. Studies, interprets, <br />and applies statutes, ordinances, court decisions, and legal opinions in <br />the preparation of formal opinions, briefs, and trial briefs; interviews <br />witnesses and prepares pleadings and other papers in connection with lsw- <br />suits, trials, hearings, and other legal proceedings. Makes decisions <br />concerning the advisability to prosecute, compromise, or dismiss c~vJl <br />litigation subject to approval of the City Attorney; conducts condemnations, <br />damage or other civil suits in all state and federal courts, including <br />appellate work. Interprets and furnishes information regarding City <br />ordinances, Charter provisions and the State codes; checks specifications, <br />contracts and special assessment proceedings. Answers legal questions of <br />citizens concerning city business, attends meetings of boards and commissions <br />as requested and gives legal advice and counsel. Performs related work as <br />assigned. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />The work of this class involves the assignment, of municipal legal work of <br />average difficulty. Employees work without detailed supervision and exercise <br />considerable independent judgement. <br /> <br />RECOM}~NDED BASIC QUALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />One and one-half years of full-time experience in the practice of public <br />corporation law and graduation from an accredited law school. Candidates <br />must have gained admission to the California State Bar Association. Experience <br />in general civil law may be substituted for public corporation law experience <br />on the basis of two months of general civil practice for one month of public <br />corporation practice. Special Stipulation: Private practice will not.be per- <br />mitted after appointment. <br /> <br />DESIRABLE KNO~%EDGE, SKIL.LS AND ABILITIES <br /> <br />Thorough knowledge of civil and criminal law, local law and ordinances of <br />established precedents and sources of legal reference. Thorough knowledge of <br />the principles, methods and practices of legal research and investigation. <br />Thorough knowledge of pleadings and practices of effective presentation of <br />court cases. Thorough knowledge o£ judicial procedures and the rules of <br />evidence. Ability to analyze legal documents and instruments. Ability to <br />appraise and organize facts and to present evidence and other material in <br />written or oral form. Ability to establish and maintain effective working <br />relationships with other officials and employees of the City, court officials <br />and the general public. <br /> <br /> <br />
