RESOLUTION NO. 75-138

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
SANTA ANA SUPPORTING THE EXTENSION OF ROUTE 57
SOUTH TO THE CORONA DEL MAR FREEWAY VIA THE SANTA
ANA RIVER CORRIDOR

WHEREAS, the circulation element of the General Plan of
the City of Santa Ana adopted in 1966 indicates the need for a
freeway located in the vicinity of the Santa Ana River; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Transportation of the State
of California has contracted for the construction of the final
segment of Route 57 north of the Santa Aha Freeway (Route 5)
and the Garden Grove Freeway (Route 22), said construction to be
completed at the end of 1975; and

WHEREAS, route planning studies of the Department of
Transportation of the State of California indicate that without
the Southern extension of Route 57, the capacity of the arterial
street system of the City of Santa Ana will be inadequate by
1995; and

WHEREAS, said studies considered three alternative
routes for the extension of Route 57 south of the interchange
with Routes 5 and 22, said alternates consisting of corridors
identified as the Harbor Corridor, the Santa Aha River Corri-
dor and the Bristol-Main Corridor; and

WHEREAS, said studies indicate that the extension of
Route 57 south to the Corona Del Mar Freeway (Route 73) and the
San Diego Freeway (Route 405) via the Santa Ana River Corridor
would have the least impact upon the social structure, economy
and environment of the City of Santa Ana; and

WHEREAS, the Orange County Transit District has adopted
a master plan providing for the utilization of the southern ex-
tension of Route 57 via the Santa Ana River Corridor as a key
element in their future transit system; and

WHEREAS, the Planning Commission of the City of Santa
Ana and the Transportation Advisory Committee of the City of
Santa Ana have both recommended support for the southern exten-
sion of Route 57 to the Corona Del Mar Freeway via the Santa
Ana River Corridor, considering said extension to be in the best
interests of the City of Santa Ana.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of
the City of Santa Ana:

1. That this City Council hereby supports the southern
extension of Route 57 to the Corona Del Mar Freeway via the
Santa Ana River Corridor and recommends that the Department of
Transportation of the State of California provide for the com-
pletion of said extension at the earliest possible date.

2. That this City Council urges the County of Orange,
the Orange County Transit District, and the cities of Costa Mesa,
Garden Grove, Fountain Valley and Anaheim join with the City of
Santa Ana in support of said extension.

3. That the City Clerk of the City of Santa Ana shall
cause copies of this resolution to be forwarded to the Governor
of California, the State Transportation Board, the State Highway
Commission, the State Department of Transportation and to all
State Senators and Assemblymen representing Orange County.
