(Classification Specification) <br /> <br />CITY OF SANTA ANA <br /> <br />PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />Under administrative direction, develops, promotes and administers the City's public <br />relations and public information program. <br /> <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Plans, develops, implements and maintains a comprehensive public relations and public <br />information program; prepares regular news releases and develops, promotes and main- <br />tains contacts with all news media including newspapers, magazines, radio, press and <br />television; advises City management on matters pertaining to relations with the public; <br />assists City cormnittees and commissions with promotion of specific projects; coordinates <br />internal and external public relations programs to develop a thorough understanding <br />of local government activities by citizens, public officials and City personnel; <br />maintains liaison with community groups interested in City affairs; helps develop <br />and coordinate varied public affairs workshops and discussion groups; establishes <br />inter-governmental associations regarding pending legislation and other matters of <br />interest or concern to the City; performs a variety of staff services and special <br />assignments for the City Manager's Office; confers with and assists persons request- <br />ing information or services or making complaints; investigates causes of complaints <br />and in coordination with the City Manager and/or department heads, recommends appro- <br />priate action to be taken; prepares comprehensive analyses and reports; and performs <br />other related duties as required. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF T~IE CLASS <br /> <br />Assignments under this class are received in the form of general or oral outlines and <br />are.carried out with a high degree of independent creativity requiring the exercise <br />of independent-judgment and initiative. The incumbent acquires an intimate knowledge <br />of.all municipal activities, current and proposed community projects and promotes <br />public understanding and citizen participation, in City government. <br /> <br />RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in public relations <br />administration, advertising, journalism, English or a related field and two years' <br />responsible administrative/experience in an advertising news media management or <br />public relations firm; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which <br />provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities; <br /> <br />Considerable knowledge of: municipal organization and functions and relationships <br />with other levels of government; the principles, practices and techniques of public <br /> <br />information and public relations work, professional journalism, <br />report format.
