KLG:rs <br />5-12-76 <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. 76-55 <br /> <br />A REOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF <br />THE CITY OF SANTA ANA URGING AMEND- <br />MENT TO THE FEDERAL VOTING RIGHTS <br />ACT OF 1975 TO REDUCE THE COST THEREOF <br />TO LOCAL GOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the effect of the Federal Voting Rights Act <br />of 1975 upon the City of Santa Ana and other cities and counties <br />within the State of California is that bilingual voting materials <br />must be mailed to all registered voters, at very substantial ex- <br />pense; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, much of the expenditure therefor is wasteful <br />of public moneys and other public resources, in that the nunkbers <br />of registered voters who require the assistance of bilingual <br />voting materials is very small in proportion to the total nun~ber <br />of registered voters in the city and elsewhere. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the City Council of <br />the City of Santa Ana that said Council hereby urges upon the <br />Congress of the United States that the Voting Rights Act of 1975 <br />be amended to permit the mailing of a notice to all registered <br />voters that bilingual voting materials are available in a speci- <br />fied office of the agency that is calling the election, said notice <br />to be in the foreign language or languages applicable to that <br />jurisdiction, and requiring that such bilingual voting materials <br />be available for distribution in said office, but not requiring <br />that they be mailed to all registered voters. <br /> <br />PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of <br />Santa Ana at its regular meeting held on the l?th day of <br /> , 1976. <br /> <br />ATTEST: <br /> <br />STATE OF CALIFORNIA ) <br />COUNTY OF ORANGE ) Ss. <br />CITY OF SANTA ANA ) <br /> <br /> I, FLORENCE I.
