RESOLUTION NO. 77-120 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL <br />OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA HONORING <br />REVEREND DONN D. MOOMAW AS THE <br />1977 SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Reverend Donn D. Moomaw has been named <br />the 1977 "Sportsman of the Year" by the Board of Directors <br />of the Orange County Sports Celebrities; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in receiving this honor he joins a coveted <br />list of Orange County greats including Dan Gurney, Rod Laver, <br />Clair Van Hoorebeke, Del Crandall, Dr. Sammy Lee, and the <br />late Eddie West; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Reverend Dorm D. Moomaw's outstanding sports <br />career began at Santa Ana High School where he was an all-CIF <br />football and basketball star; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, he furthered his career when he twice earned <br />consensus All-American honors at UCLA in 1950 and 1952 as a <br />defensive center and linebacker; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Reverend Donn D. Moomaw, who wore No. 80 at <br />UCLA, is t~e only defensive football player to have his jersey <br />retired; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, he is one of the pioneer organizers of the <br />"Fellowship of Christian Athletes" and was ordained a Presbyterian <br />Minister in 19S?; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Reverend Donn D. Moomaw's contributions to <br />the social, cultural and spiritual life of the Southland have <br />been acknowledged through such awards as: <br /> <br />Appointment by Governor Reagan to the <br />California Board of Education (1968-1972); <br /> <br />Appointment by President Gerald Ford to <br />the President's Council on Physical Fitness <br />and Sports (1974-1976); <br /> <br />Named in 1957 by the State Junior Chamber <br />of Commerce as one of five outstanding men <br />in California; <br /> <br />Named in 1970 by the bCLA Alumni Association <br />as one of five outstanding men in California; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Reverend Dorm D. Moomaw received his Bachelor <br />of Science Degree in Physical Education from UCLA; a B.D. from <br />Princeton Theological Seminary; and a D.D. from Sterling College <br />in Kansas; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, Reverend Moomaw's church, the Bel Air Presby- <br />terian, is the base for his inspirational sermons which have <br />become his trademark throughout the Southland; <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE~ BE IT RESOLVED: That the City Council <br />does designate and proclaim November 1S, 1977 as "Donn D. Moomaw <br />Day" and does call upon all his friends both near and far to <br />join in the celebration honoring him as the 1977 "Sportsman of <br />the Year". <br /> <br /> <br />
