RESOLUTION NO. 77-127 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF SANTA ANA COMMENDING THE SALVATION <br />ARMY ON THE OCCASION OF THEIR 90TH BIRTHDAY <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, The Salvation Army, founded in London, England <br />in 1865 by William Booth, is an international, religious and <br />charitable organization, based on love for God and love for <br />Man; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, today, under the direction of General Arnold <br />Brown, The Salvation Army serves 81 countries, preaches: in 106 <br />languages and maintains 19,454 religious/charitable centers <br />and 28 schools for officers' training; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in 1887, seven years after George Railton first <br />brought The Salvation Army to the United States, the City of <br />Santa Aha became one of the first centers in the Western States; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, from the small store front on First Street es- <br />tablished by Captain and Mrs. Swithewbank,The Salvation Army <br />was located on Second and Sycamore Streets from 1923 until they <br />moved to their present modern facility on Edinger in 1970; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, today, the 500 member congregation enjoys a <br />modern sanctuary, business and administration building, and a <br />Christian education building; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, in 1976 the Youth Community Center, consisting <br />of a. gymnasium, weight room, game room, handball courts, and <br />playing fields, was dedicated to enrich the lives of Santa Ana <br />Youth and their families; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the 900 co-ed members of the Youth Community <br />Center participate in a myriad of activities ranging from an <br />active sports program to summer camp, for which the 8 to 18 <br />year olds pay a nominal charge of $2.00 annually; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, The Santa Ana Salvation Army also operates a <br />Hospitality House which offers 24 hour emergency care; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Family Service <br />furniture, and counseling services <br />Ana and Tustin; and <br /> <br />Bureau offers food, clothing, <br />to the residents of Santa <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, The Santa Ana Salvation Army, currently directed <br />by Captain and Mrs. Alfred R. Van Cleef, affected the lives of <br />more than 300,000 people through their ministry in 1976; <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of <br />the City of Santa Ana expresses for the City, and the citizens <br />of the City, the gratitude and thanks for the devoted and un- <br />selfish service to the people of Santa A~a by The Salvation <br />Army, and calls upon the untold thousands of friends and supporters <br />to join together in the celebration of the 90th anniversary of <br />the founding of The Santa Aha Salvation Army. <br /> <br /> ADOPTED this 7th day of November , 1977, by the <br />following vote: <br /> <br /> <br />
