City of Santa Ana <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />TRANSPORTATION AND'TRAFFIC ENGINEER <br /> <br />Under administrative direction of the Director of Public Works, plans, develops, pro- <br />motes and directs a comprehensive municipal transportation systems management progr&m, <br />directs the Cityts traffic engineering functions, and performs other related work es <br />required. <br /> <br />EXAHPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Formulates, develops, pro~otes and coordinates a comprehensive, integrated ~unicip~l <br />transportation systems management program involving the development of short and lou~- <br />term plans, programs and projects designed to achieve optimum integration w~th reEio~al <br />transportation systems, improve management of existing transportation facilities, ~nd <br />enhance the mobility of people and goods; provides technical advice and assistance to <br />the City Hanager and City Council on transportation matters; develops and maintains <br />close liaison with transportation planninS agencies at all levels of ~overnment to p~O- <br />mote or protect the City's needs and interests; analyzes and makes reco~mendations on. <br />proposed transportatinn-related legislation which may affect City's interests; prepares <br />position statements for legislative action; monitors grant programs for possible extcr~al <br />lundinE opportunities; serves as task force leader in mobilizing available resourceS <br />for the resolution of specific tran~portatinn problems or the implementation of projects <br />requiring inter-departmental cooperation; encourages citizen participation in transpor- <br />tation planning process and promotes support for proposed programs and projects; directs <br />the supervision of a traffic engineering operations and planning unit; coordinates and <br />integrates transportation and traffic planninE activities with public and private agen- <br />cies; and prepares comprehensive, technical reports. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF TKE CLASS <br /> <br />ins; including at~ least two yea~s' in a supervisory capacity. ABility to prepare comprehensive technical reports and general <br />correspondence and develop and deliver Oral presentations to Stoups of citizens or <br />before governmental commission meetings or hearings. Ability to supervise and coordi- <br />mete the work of others. ~ <br /> <br />The essential elements of the work of this position involve hiBhly responsible public <br />contacts requirin~ the exercise of discretion, independent Judgement and initiative <br />and the use of well-developed com~unications skills. While the primary emphasis of <br />the work involves the more sophisticated aspects of transportation systems management-. <br />the incumbent is also responsible for directihg the day-to-day operation of a traffic <br />engineering unit through the supervision of a subordinate-level professional traffic <br />engineering supervisor, <br /> <br />.RECOI~ENDED MINIHUM ~UALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in transportation or <br />civil engineering and six yearst active practice in transportation and traffic engineer- <br /> <br /> <br />
