CITY OF SANTA ANA <br /> <br />pLANNING TECHNICIAN <br /> <br />DEFINITION <br /> <br />Under t~ediate supervision, performs a variety of beginning-level professional and tech- <br />nical work in the field of urban planning and zoning administration. <br /> <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br /> <br />Researches, collects and analyzes data and prepares reports and recommendations pertaining <br />to land use, zoning, transportation, population, housing, social and economic resources <br />and projections, and other factors related to municipal planning functions; participates <br />in field surveys and investigationsf assists in th~ preparation of plan and project designs, <br />maps, diagrams, graphs, scale models and other graphic material; assists in the preparation <br />of elements, precise portions, amendments and comprehensive reports relating to the (Master) <br />(General) Plan; conducts environmental studies and reviews environmental impact renorts; <br />assists in the administration of planning ordinances, including explain~ng and ~nterpreting <br />plans, regulations and procedures to th~ public; and performs other related duties as required. <br /> <br />DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS <br /> <br />Incumbents of this class apply research skills and specialized knowledge of planning prin- <br />ciples and practices, usually acquired through formalized education at the university level, <br />in performing entry-level professional and technical planning work. Work assignments are <br />initially subject to close and frequent review which lessens as experience is gained. <br />Supervisory personnel are available for consultation and advice on unusual or difficult <br />problems. <br /> <br />P. ECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS <br /> <br />Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in urban plann- <br />ing, public administration, or related field or any equivalent combination of training and <br />experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities: <br /> <br />Knowledge of: research methods and statistical techniques used in the collection and <br />analysis of data pertaining to demographics, economics, sociology, etc.; principles, <br />practices and procedures of urban planning and zoning and modern techniques of implementing <br />the planning process. Ability to: systematically compile, analyze and draw logical con- <br />clusions from technical information and statistical data; perform basic graphics work <br />including preparation of maps, charts, graphs, and diagrams; prepare Clear, concise and <br />gr-mm~tically correct technical reports; meet amd deal with other public officials, prop- <br />erty owners, contractors and the general puolic in a tactful and effective manner; and <br />maintain effective working relationships with supervisors and co-workers. <br /> <br /> <br />
