Heinly presented a merit certificate and a cash award to Edward 11 ~ <br />Safety award <br />Dewey Wilson, 8161 Skywood Circle, Anaheim, who was the outstanding driver of the <br />month in the Santa Ana Safe Driving Campaign. <br />Variance <br />This being the date set for reconsideration of variance application of George Buban <br />George Buban <br />(Refer to meeting <br />to permit the removal of all existing improvements on property at 1414 Durant Street <br />May 5, 1958) <br />cAl3 <br />in an R-2 District, and to construct a new two-story, eight -unit apartment building, <br />with four one -bedroom apartments on each floor, each apartment to contain a minimum <br />of 600 square feet, off-street parking space to be provided for eight cars, adjacent <br />to a 20-foot paved alley, Mr. Raymond G. Williams, 1418 Durant Street, presented a <br />petition signed by twenty-five property owners in the area protesting the granting <br />of the variance. On motion of Councilman Gould, seconded by Markel and carried, <br />the petition was received and filed. A. W. Hoyle, 1411 North Towner Street, owner <br />of property in the 1400 bock Durant Street, stated that the proposed apartments <br />would not depreciate property values. Mrs. Ray Stahlman, 1402 Durant Street, said <br />there is no need for additional apartments in the area as there are numerous <br />vacancies in the immediate neighborhood. Mrs. Craig Leland, owner of property on <br />Durant Street, favored the variance. James Lukens, owner of the property in <br />question, and George Matthews, associate of Mr. Buban, requested the granting of <br />the variance. Mrs. Thelma Willoughby, 1412 Durant Street, and Mrs. Blanche Ferdine <br />1325 North Ross Street, again protested the granting of the variance in an R-2 <br />District. On motion of Councilman Hubbard, seconded by Hall and carried, the var- <br />iance application of George Buban was granted, subject to conditions as outlined in <br />Planning Commission's letter. <br />Roll Call Ayes, Councilmen Royal E. Ogden Markel <br />Absent, Councilmen None <br />if <br />Variance <br />Communication was read of the Planning Commission recommending approval of variance <br />Harry Tancredi <br />EN ? application of Harry Tancredi to permit the establishment and operation of a Rich- <br />field Oil Company station, construct a two-story office building, in accordance with <br />Plot plan, limiting the office spaces to three instead of four, with nine off-street <br />parking spaces and to construct a ten -unit motel -apartment building with accommoda- <br />tions for ten cars, on the south side of 17th Street, adjacent to the east side of <br />the Freeway, subject to certain conditions. The applicant objected to the conditio <br />recommended by the Department of Public Works. A representative of the Richfield <br />Oil Company requested realignment of the off -ramp which was agreeable to the <br />Director of Public Works. On motion of Councilman Hubbard, seconded by Markel and <br />carried, the variance application was granted subject to conditions of the Commission <br />and the Department of Public Works. <br />11 <br />Variance <br />Communication of the Planning Commission was read recommending approval of variance <br />Santa Maria Pump <br />& Implement Co. <br />application of the Santa Maria Pump & Implement Company to establish and operate a <br />gasoline service station at 2238 Magnolia Avenue and 2235-2239 Bristol Street, in <br />R-1 and R-2 Districts, the existing residential buildings to be removed from propert <br />to make roan for proposed development, subject to certain conditions. Five persons <br />residing in the neighborhood favored granting the variance for the reason that the <br />area is no longer desirable as a residential district. On motion of Councilman <br />Gould, seconded by Hall and carried, the variance application was granted subject to <br />conditions of the Commission and the Department of Public Works. Councilman Markel) <br />disqualified himself on this matter after the vote was taken. <br />
