RESOLUTION NO. 78-94 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL <br />OF THE CITY OF SANTA ANA <br />PROCLAIMING JULY 17, 1978 AS <br />"DOUGLAS CORRIGAN DAY" <br /> IN THE CITY OF SANTA ANA <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />on July 16, 1938 DOUGLAS CORRIGAN completed a flight <br />from Long Beach to New York in less than 28 hours, <br />setting a new nonstop transcontinental speed record; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />on July 17, 1938 Corrigan's Ancient Curtis Robin J-6 <br />monoplane left New York's Floyd Bennett Airfield in <br />heavy fog for his return trip to the west coast; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, DOUGLAS CORRIGAN flew through the inpenetrable fog for <br /> 24 hours, convinced that he was California-bound; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />emerging from the murk, Doug found that he had "accidentally" <br />flown to Dublin, Ireland, because of the fog, a faulty <br />compass, and the lack of radio; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, his flight provided mirth and excitement during some <br /> of the dreariest years of the nation's history; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, DOUGLAS CORRIGAN has honored Santa Ana as a world- <br /> renowned resident for many years; <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That the City Council of the <br /> City of Santa Ana, upon the 40th Anniversary o~f the <br /> historic flight, does hereby proclaim July 17th, 1978 <br /> as: <br /> <br />"DOUGLAS CORRIGAN DAY" <br /> <br />in the City of Santa Ana and calls upon all his <br />friends nationwide to join in this celebration. <br /> <br />ADOPTED this 17th day of July, 1978, by the following vote: <br /> <br />AYES: <br /> <br />COUNCILMEN: Garthe, Brandt, Bricken, Ortiz, <br /> Yamamoto, Evans, Ward <br /> <br />NOES: COUNCILMEN: None <br /> <br />ABSENT: COUNCILMEN: None <br /> <br />ATTEST: <br /> <br />CLERK OF THE COUNCIL <br /> <br />MAYOR <br /> <br />APPROVED AS TO FORM: <br /> <br />KEITH L.
