RESOLUTION NO. 78-113 <br /> <br /> A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE <br /> CITY OF SANTA ANA PROCLAIMING <br />AUGUST 26, 1978 AS "TREASURES OF CYPRUS DAY" <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />in the spirit of international brotherhood, THE REPUBLIC <br />OF CYPRUS has graciously joined the United States of <br />America in this country's Bictentennial; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />as a tribute to this historic event, THE REPUBLIC OF <br />CYPRUS, in conjunction with The Smithsonian Institution <br />Traveling Exhibition Service, has sent a remarkable <br />collection of one hundred and seventy-eight objects <br />of ancient art to the City of Santa Ana; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />archaeological excavations during the last one hundred <br />years have uncovered evidence of rich and diverse cul- <br />tures which existed in Cyprus as early as 5800 B.C.; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />nearly eight millenia are represented in this exhibition, <br />beginning with the oldest period in the Island's pre- <br />history, the Neolithic, and ending with nineteenth <br />century folk objects; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />among the ancient treasures to be seen in the exhibition <br />are stone bowls~ dating from about 5800 B.C., from <br />Khirokitia, the earliest known Neolithic settlement <br />in THE REPUBLIC OF CYPRUS; a clay cylinder from the <br />Late Bronze Age site of Enkomi which manifests traces <br />of what appears to be a still undeciphered Cyro-Minoan~ <br />script; over two dozen examples of pottery from nearly <br />every period of Cypriot culture since 2300 B.C.; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, included are jugs, tankards, bowls, pitchers, amphorae <br /> and even a baby's rattle dating from about 1500 B.C.; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, <br /> <br />in addition to the substantial selection of pottery, <br />TREASURES OF CYPRUS boasts small bronze stands or <br />tripods, a bone stylus, terra cotta figurines, small <br />sculptures of limestone and marble, a pair of exquisitely <br />modeled gold earrings from the Roman period and several <br />glazed bowls from the Medieval period; <br /> <br />NOW, <br /> <br />THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That the City Council of the City <br /> of Santa Ana, on behalf of the City, and the citizens of <br /> the City, does hereby proclaim August 26, 1978, as: <br /> <br />"TREASURES OF CYPRUS DAY" <br /> <br />BE <br /> <br />IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the City of Santa Aha does warmly <br /> invite the people of Southern California to help the <br /> City celebrate this distinguished exhibition at the <br /> Bowers Museum from August 26, to October 8, 1978. <br /> <br />PASSED AND <br /> <br />ATTEST: <br /> <br />ADOPTED by the City Council of the City of Santa Ana <br />at its regular meeting held on the 21st day of August, <br />by the following vote: <br /> <br />1978, <br /> <br />AYES: <br />NOES: <br /> <br />ABSENT: <br /> <br />COUNCILMEN:¥amamo~~ Ortiz, Evan/~ Brandt, Ward <br />COUNCILMEN:None /,j? / y <br />COUNCILMEN'B~ <br /> MAYOR <br /> <br />KEITH L.
