RESOLUTION NO. 80-137 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF SANTA ANA REQUESTING CITIZENS <br />THROUGHOUT CALIFORNIA TO CELEBRATE <br />OCTOBER 7, 1980, AS NATIONAL GUARD DAY <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the National Guard is the oldest military force <br />in the nation, originating in the early colonial days on October 7, <br />1636, with the formation of the Old North Regiment of the Massa- <br />chusetts Colonial Militia; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, for 344 years, the men and women of the National <br />Guard have repeatedly demonstrated their dedication and patriotism <br />by participation in every conflict involving the United States during <br />which more than 4,000,000 National Guard members joined forces with <br />active military units to defend the principles of this nation; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the National Guard is unique among all services <br />because of its federal mission as the principal backup to the active <br />Army and Air Force in times of war or national emergency and its <br />state mission to provide for protection of life and property and <br />preserve peace, order, and public safety in times of natural <br />disasters; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, since 1975, the California National Guard has <br />expended more than 200,000 man-days in support of the citizens of <br />California during forest fires, floods, and search and rescue mis- <br />sions; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, during the floods in February and March of 1980, <br />700 men and women of the California National Guard were called from <br />their homes, families, and businesses to assist the communities of <br />California; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the California National Guard is a vital part of <br />the National Guard of the United States and has provided the citi- <br />zens of California with a trained and organized militia ready to <br />serve the state as well as the nation in time of need; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that a day be designated <br />in commemoration of the California National Guard and out of recog- <br />nition of the debt of gratitude owed by the people of the State of <br />California to those who serve as members of the California National <br />Guard. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF SANTA ANA: That the City of Santa Ana, does hereby join <br />with the bicameral State legislature in requesting citizens through- <br />out California to celebrate October 7, 1980, as National Guard Day. <br /> <br /> ADOPTED, this 18th day of August <br />the following vote: <br /> <br />, 1980, by <br /> <br />AYES: <br /> <br />NOES: <br /> <br />COUNCILMEN: <br />COUNCILMEN: <br /> <br />GRISET, LUXEMBOURG~R, SERRATO, WARD <br />YAMAMOTO <br />MARKEL <br /> <br />ATTEST: <br /> <br />ABSENT: <br /> <br />COUNCILMEN: <br /> <br />BRI CKEN <br /> <br /> <br />
